How to Disinfect Your Home in 5 Easy Steps

John Dorner • Jun 22, 2021

A home is where the heart is…except when germs and bacteria lie on every surface. In a post-pandemic landscape, it’s more important than ever to homeowners like yourself that you know how to disinfect your home.

But how to do it seems to be the problem, right? Here at DLL Cleaning Services, we’ve heard this all from our clients, which is why we’ve put together this short guide on how to disinfect your home in five easy steps. By following this guide you should be able to experience success in knowing your home is clean, disinfected, and ready for you and your family to seize the day.

1) Cleaning Solutions and Starting the Disinfection

Before you begin disinfecting your home, it’s important to understand that a space can’t truly be disinfected unless it’s cleaned first. You’ll need to use cleaning solutions meant to clean all surfaces before you disinfect to make sure that the germs and bacteria you’re targeting take the hit they need to.

All cleaning solutions you use should be EPA-approved and, if you have pets or kids, safe for them as well. You can buy products such as these at your local retail stores, such as Method home cleaners or Clorox.

Make sure you have the following items ready to go for your day of cleaning:

  • Gloves
  • Mask
  • Microfiber Cloths
  • Paper Towels

With these tools and solutions ready to go, it will be much easier for you to complete your disinfection day.

2) Move Room to Room

Expecting to be able to thoroughly disinfect your home all at one time can be overzealous. The best way to clean and disinfect your home is by moving room to room so that each area can get the attention it deserves — like we do in our professional house cleaning service

You could consider starting in the rooms that require less effort, such as bedrooms and living rooms, before moving onto tougher zones like the kitchen and the bathroom. It’s the rooms with the most traffic and most people that will most likely have the most germs, so those areas need extra attention to detail.

3) Watch for High Touch Surfaces

The areas in your home with the most germs and bacteria to spread are areas we call high touch surfaces. These surfaces are touched or used daily and include:

  • Drawer handles
  • Light Switches
  • Electronics
  • Toilets and their handles
  • Remotes and game controllers
  • Tables and chairs
  • Railings of all kinds
  • Faucets
  • Handles on appliances
  • Doorknobs

We recommend that you do what we do in our deep cleaning services and utilize heavy amounts of cleaning solutions and a microfiber cloth to wipe down those surfaces. The texture of the cloth paired with the power of the cleaning solution should kill even the smallest organisms.

4) Deep Clean All Bathrooms

No matter how heavily you really want to disinfect your home, deep cleaning the bathrooms should happen no matter what. There are so many germs that lurk in the bathroom on the toilet seat alone, and cleaning in there can help a lot with the spread of bacteria and germs.

In our professional disinfecting services, we like to start from the top of the bathroom and work all the way down to the floors. This means wiping off the walls and ceilings if possible with a cleaning solution and dusting.

You’ll then want to move to the high touch surfaces. Make sure to use heavy-duty cleaning solutions on the toilet and shower. Then mop and sanitize the floors and leave everything to dry.

5)  Pay Attention to Detail in the Kitchen

Your kitchen needs to be clean and sanitized for a multitude of reasons — some of the main ones are food safety and contamination. A dirty kitchen can lead to a lot of health issues in your family and even food poisoning.

Be sure to first clean your kitchen with hot soapy water or your choice of an all-purpose cleaner. Then use your sanitizing solutions on all visible surfaces. This would be a great time to disinfect the inside of your appliances as well!

Be sure to deep clean and sanitize your floors as well since many foods and other contaminants fall on the floor regularly.
